RECONSTRUCTIONS

THE MEMPHITE TOMB OF HOREMHEB

As an outlet for my interest in Egyptian aesthetics and thought, I have over the last four years been experimenting with virtual reconstruction of ancient monuments. My main subject is the private tomb of Horemheb at Saqqara. A remarkable monument filled with unique scenes of actual events rather than the expected canon of funary images, The General Horemheb's private tomb, he was later to become king, is the largest yet found in the New Kingdom necropolis. Built over Old Kingdom mastabas opposite the ancient capital, it has the plan of a state temple in miniature.

Not content with reconstructions I have seen, I decided I could do better. To this end, my goal is to produce images with as much accuracy as possible, but imbued with a liveliness lacking in most other examples. I include as much detail and features as possible gathered from source material such as excavation memoirs etc. and with extensive research attempt to 'fill in the blanks' in a plausible manner. This has necessitated my acquiring a knowledge of Middle Egyptian as even the texts should be legible - no meaningless babble. Every part must be as true as I can make it to my unerstanding of ancient thought. Of course, the great benifit of virutal models is that they can be altered when new information presents itself, so that the work is always open to improvement.
